The plant belongs to the leaf varieties of chicory and forms a rosette of elongated, light green leaves. When harvested early, the leaves are very tender; however, upon overripening, they may become slightly pubescent. The variety is suitable for year-round cultivation, provided protection is ensured during the cold months.

This variety is most often considered in the context of using the leaves as a salad crop. The leaves are consumed both fresh and after heat treatment, such as stewing or boiling, which is traditional for Italian cuisine.
