Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck Sweet orange · Fruit crops · bred by FRIGSA/IVIA/INIA

Variety description

10 August 2026

The Pinalate variety is a natural mutant of the orange, characterized by a specific bright yellow color of the mature fruit peel, caused by the accumulation of colorless carotenoids such as phytoene, phytofluene, and ζ-carotene. At the same time, the fruit composition shows a significantly reduced content of xanthophylls and apocarotenoids, which are responsible for the typical orange color.

The biochemical profile of the variety also includes a lower content of abscisic acid in the peel of mature fruits compared to the original Navelate variety. No morphological differences in carotenoid accumulation were found in the leaves of Pinalate and the parent variety. The variety is primarily used as a model for scientific research in the field of fruit development biology.
