The Lucan variety was bred through clonal selection from the traditional Czech variety Žatecký poloraný červeňák (Saaz). The plant is low-vigor, has short lateral shoots 15–25 cm long, and stems with a characteristic reddish tint.

The alpha-acid content in the cones is about 4.0%, beta-acids are 3.3%, and cohumulone is 21%. The variety is moderately susceptible to downy mildew and is susceptible to infection by all five known hop viruses.

The variety has the right to use the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) "Žatecký chmel". Currently, it is grown on limited areas and is often classified in trade as a type of Saazer or Bohemian Early Red.
