The variety is a hybrid of sweet orange and trifoliate orange. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth, a dense canopy, and an absence of thorns or weakly expressed thorns. The leaves are trifoliate. The fruits of the rootstock itself are sour and are not used for food.

As a rootstock, CARRIZO promotes early fruit ripening on grafted trees. It possesses resistance to citrus tristeza virus and moderate tolerance to Phytophthora and nematodes. The variety exhibits sensitivity to high soil pH levels, calcareous, saline, and heavy clay soils, where chlorosis may be observed.

Trees grafted onto CARRIZO have a good root system. Fruits on such plants are characterized by a high juice and sugar content and a smooth rind. The variety is incompatible with the Eureka lemon variety.
