Deciduous compact shrub reaching a height of about 1 meter at ten years of age, and up to 1.5 meters in maturity. The variety is often identified with the Japanese variety Shichidanka.
Inflorescences are of the lacecap type with small fertile flowers in the center and double star-shaped sterile flowers on the periphery. The color varies from light pink to light blue or lilac depending on soil pH. The flowering period is June–July.
The plant is frost-resistant (zones 5a–9b), prefers sunny or semi-shaded locations and moist, nutrient-rich, well-drained soils. Requires regular removal of old and weak shoots. Used in landscape design for borders, group plantings, and container cultivation.
