The compact perennial shrub has lanceolate or elliptical matte leaves of a green-yellow shade. The inflorescences are flat corymbs 7–8 cm in diameter. The central fertile flowers can vary from pink and purple to blue, while the marginal sterile flowers are white upon opening and later acquire a carmine-pink or dark red color.
The plant prefers moist, fertile, well-drained soils with an acidic or neutral reaction. On acidic soils, the color of the inflorescences becomes blue. The variety is relatively winter-hardy (USDA zones 6–9), but requires winter cover due to its sensitivity to late spring frosts. It is suitable for container cultivation and use in landscape design.
