The summer variety Aino, also known as Tsaarin kilpi or Kuhno, originates from Tartu and was introduced to Finland in 1885. It is a winter-hardy tree, suitable for cultivation up to climate zone VI. The fruits are medium-sized, conical in shape, and yellow with red stripes; the flesh is juicy and soft, and the variety is considered a good culinary choice.
The winter variety Aino is characterized by high winter hardiness and the ability to grow in harsh climatic conditions up to zone VI. The fruits of this variety are distinguished by pronounced tannin levels, making the variety one of the best in Finland for cider production, as well as suitable for processing into jam and for baking.
