The cultivar belongs to the local Portuguese gene pool, which is confirmed by genetic studies using microsatellite markers. Morphological diversity is observed within the cultivar, distinguishing several accessions such as Espriega 1, Espriega 2, Espriega Clara, Espriega Verde, and Espriega Parda.

In Portuguese catalogs, the cultivar is designated for use as fresh fruit. The origin of the cultivar is linked to folk selection and natural hybridization, and its genetic profile in a number of cases overlaps with the Reineta cultivar.
