The variety is presumably of Dutch origin and was first mentioned in 1766. The fruit is of medium size, with skin colored greenish-yellow with a dull red blush and characteristic russeting. The flesh is firm and juicy, distinguished by a pronounced spicy sweet-and-sour taste.

The apple tree belongs to late-maturing varieties. Harvest maturity occurs in mid-October, and the fruit reaches consumer maturity between January and April. Trees of this variety are characterized by susceptibility to apple scab and apple tree canker.
