The variety is a mutation (sport) of the Jonagold variety. Like other members of this group, it is intended for fresh consumption. In agronomic literature, individual morphological differences of this variety, apart from coloration features, are practically not distinguished.

The main goal of selecting mutants of the Jonagold group, to which Jonabel belongs, is to improve the appearance of the fruit by increasing the intensity of the red color. In trade classifications, the variety is often assigned to color group C, while the taste qualities and flesh firmness correspond to the parent variety.
