The variety is a clone selected at the Ujfehertó research station to preserve and improve the characteristics of the classic Jonathan. It is characterized by having the largest fruits among Hungarian clones of this type and intense coloration.

Yield levels are on par with the original variety. Jonathan M.40 maintains high sensitivity to powdery mildew and susceptibility to fire blight, which is why it is often used in scientific research as a susceptible control sample.
