The variety was bred in the 1930s in New Zealand by J.H. Kidd. The object was tested under the laboratory number Kidd's D.8, and in 1962 it was officially introduced to the market under the name Gala.
The fruits are small to medium in size, have an oblong-conical shape, and often show distinct ribbing at the calyx. The skin is thin, golden-yellow in color with an orange-crimson blush and stripes. The flesh is creamy-white, firm, fine-grained, juicy, and crisp, with a sweet taste.
The variety is intended primarily for fresh consumption. The tree is characterized by a high tendency for fruiting and requires mandatory crop thinning to maintain fruit size.
