The rootstock is the result of breeding from a group of open-pollinated seedlings using the M.9 variety as the mother plant. The name is an acronym: Michigan, Apple, Rootstock, Klone.

Trees grafted onto this rootstock reach approximately 25% of the size of a tree on a vigorous rootstock, which makes them somewhat larger than on the M.9 rootstock. The plant is characterized by high productivity, good resistance to lodging, and a lack of root suckers, but it is sensitive to drought.
