The name Marschanzker is traditionally associated with the Borsdorfer group of varieties, while Steirischer Maschanzker is considered an independent form that originated in Styria. Varieties of this group are winter types, with a consumption period lasting from November to March.

The tree has medium vigor and forms a wide crown. The fruits are small or medium, round or flat in shape, with smooth straw-yellow skin, sometimes featuring a blush and russeting. The flesh is firm, fine-grained, juicy, and has a wine-sweet taste.

The plants are demanding regarding soil fertility and perform poorly on heavy clay soils. Entry into bearing is late, and a tendency toward biennial bearing is noted. The Steirischer Maschanzker variety can be susceptible to scab, but the fruits are characterized by high wind resistance.
