The variety originated in France as a mutation of the Melrose variety, which was bred in the USA. As a clone of the parent variety, it largely inherits its characteristics, but was selected by breeders primarily for improved fruit coloration.

The fruits are characterized by creamy-white, firm, and juicy flesh, and possess a sweet, slightly tart, and aromatic flavor. In terms of maturity, the variety belongs to late categories.

The development and disease resistance characteristics of the Marstar variety are largely similar to those of the parent Melrose variety, which is susceptible to scab, powdery mildew, and canker.
