The variety originated as a chance seedling in 1875 in Germany and was named after St. Martin's Day. The tree is small to medium in size, reaching 2.5–4.5 m in height with a crown width of 2.5–3.5 m.

The fruits have yellow-red coloring and firm flesh. The variety is late-maturing, intended for fresh consumption from January, as well as for culinary use and processing into juice and cider. The plant prefers sunny or partially shaded locations with fertile and moist soil.
