The variety is a selection clone (mutant) of the classic McIntosh apple tree. Its main distinctive feature is improved skin coloration of the fruits: while the original variety often has striped blush on the shaded side, in Imperial All Red, an intense red color covers the entire surface of the apple.

The fruits are characterized by high flavor quality, keeping quality, and transportability. The variety belongs to the winter maturity group. Like the base variety, Imperial All Red has high susceptibility to scab infection of leaves and fruits.

Clones of the McIntosh group can differ in yield, vigor, and tendency toward pre-harvest fruit drop. Tree height and lodging resistance depend primarily on the type of rootstock used.
