The variety is a bud mutation of the Oregon Spur variety, belonging to the Red Delicious group. Trees of this type are spur-type, characterized by moderate growth vigor and shortened internodes.

The fruits are distinguished by very early development of intense red coloration. The flesh is creamy white, juicy, and may be starchy at harvest, acquiring better flavor qualities after a short period of cold storage.

When the tree is overloaded with crop, the variety is prone to fruit size reduction. A tendency toward core rot is noted, and the variety is used in commercial orcharding.
