The Jolana variety was bred as part of a breeding program to create disease-resistant apple trees using the genetics of Malus floribunda 821, which carries the Vf gene. The main purpose of the variety was to provide resistance to scab in new generations of fruit crops.
In agronomic publications, the variety is more often referred to as a parent form and ancestor of well-known Czech varieties such as Vanda, Otava, Rajka, and Topaz. Detailed morphological descriptions for industrial use are limited in available sources, as Jolana is primarily an important breeding resource.
