The tree is medium-sized, reaching 3.5–6 meters in height. The crown has a wide-rounded shape of medium density; skeletal branches are prone to drooping under the weight of the crop. The cultivar was selected in 1826 in the USA and is considered a seedling of the Esopus Spitzenburg cultivar.
The fruit is medium-sized, rounded, and covered with a thin red skin with a yellowish-green blush. The flesh is cream-yellow in color, firm and juicy. Harvest maturity occurs in the second half of September, and the consumption period lasts from November to April.
The cultivar enters fruiting in the 4–5th year and is distinguished by regular yields. The plant is demanding in care and has medium or low resistance to powdery mildew and scab. It is an important genetic source for the breeding of many other apple cultivars.
