The variety is a chance seedling discovered by farmer John McIntosh in the province of Ontario. The trees are medium-sized, have a broadly spreading, sparse crown with scaffold branches diverging in a bowl shape.
The fruits are medium-sized, round, and slightly ribbed. The skin is bright red with greenish shades and a waxy bloom. The flesh is juicy, tender, has a sweet-and-sour taste and a characteristic aroma. The variety is moderately frost-resistant and susceptible to scab.
The apples are for universal use: suitable for fresh consumption, baking, salads, and various types of canning.
