The Mantonica variety (synonym Nostrale) is a local Italian variety, most often mentioned in studies of the genetic diversity of olive trees in Sicily and Southern Italy. The tree has high vigor and forms a dense crown of spreading-upright shape.
The fruits of this variety have a dual purpose and low oil content (about 15.6% by fresh weight). The resulting oil has medium organoleptic characteristics with bitterness, pungency, and fruitiness intensity at a level of 4 points on the scale, with notes of vegetables and almond.
The variety demonstrates good resistance to olive leaf spot, Verticillium wilt, and olive knot.
