Under the general name Verdeal, Portuguese olive cultivation encompasses folk varieties that have existed for centuries. The most well-known representatives of the group include varieties from the Trás-os-Montes and Alentejo regions.
The fruits of this group are primarily used for producing high-quality olive oil with a distinct fruity aroma, notes of fresh grass, and a balanced bitterness, as well as for canning. The trees are characterized by late fruit ripening and good adaptability to local growing conditions.
The Verdeal Alentejana variety is distinguished by moderate productivity and regular bearing, while it is poorly suited for mechanized harvesting. These plants show relative resistance to diseases such as olive knot (Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. savastanoi), peacock spot, and olive fruit fly.
