The variety originates from the commune of Tourtour in the Var department, France. Like other members of the Verdale group, it is characterized by the long retention of green fruit color during the ripening process. It is used in the region's traditional olive orchards, often as part of oil blends with other local varieties.

Trees are cultivated in well-drained soils on south-west facing slopes for protection against frosts. In its growing regions, the variety is often grown without irrigation and can be cultivated with minimal use of pesticides as part of organic farming.
