A variety of Central European origin with firm flesh, belonging to the bigarreau group. The tree has a spreading crown shape that becomes rounded with age. The variety belongs to early maturity groups; fruits ripen approximately one week before the Black Tartarian variety.

The fruits are large, dark-colored, and almost black in color. The flesh is characterized by a good aroma and a pleasant taste with a distinctive tartness. The S-allele genotype for the variety has been determined as S3S4. In genetic studies, the variety may show a close relationship to Bigarreau Moreau.
