The variety belongs to the category of local Italian sweet cherries. Historical references to it appear in documents dating back to 1809, specifically in materials from Bologna, Parma, Reggio Emilia, and Modena. It is known by the synonyms Giambella, Ciambella, Ciliegia a cuore, and Zambella.

In scientific research, the variety is considered a source of biologically active compounds, including phenols, anthocyanins (in particular cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside), quinic acid derivatives, and flavonols.
