The Inge variety was bred by the John Innes Institute. In genetic studies of the incompatibility system, this variety is classified as having an S4S9 genotype.

The plant possesses resistance to bacterial canker (Pseudomonas mors-prunorum). The variety has been used in breeding programs as a parent line, particularly in the development of the Penny sweet cherry variety.
