The plant is a tree or shrub with a spreading crown. Branches often have thorns, and young shoots can be velvety-pubescent. The cultivar type is a product of centuries of folk selection and natural selection, serving as a collective name for a multitude of regional forms.
The fruits are small, 1.5–3 cm in size, and have a round or teardrop shape. The color is most often dark blue or blue-black with a waxy bloom; yellow and wine-red forms occur less frequently. The flesh is yellow-green, juicy, with a tart or mild taste, and the stone is small.
Fruit ripening occurs in September–October. The plants are characterized by the unpretentiousness and hardiness typical of wild forms. They are used both fresh and for processing, often growing in hedgerows, on the edges of fields, or in old orchards.
