The main color varies from blue-black to yellow and wine-red, while the fruit juice often has a characteristic blood-red shade.

The fruit flesh is juicy, and the taste varies from sweet to sour. The plants are characterized by low maintenance requirements, high adaptability to local conditions, and are easily propagated by root suckers. Historically, they were often used as rootstocks for cultivated plum varieties.

The main purpose of the fruit is processing. Due to their distinct aroma and taste, they are used for the preparation of alcoholic beverages, such as fruit distillates and brandy, as well as for making jams and other preserves.
