The plant is a large shrub or a small tree 3 to 6 meters tall. It grows slowly, and the branches often have thorns. The fruits, 1.5–3 cm in diameter, are round or teardrop-shaped, most often colored blue-black with a waxy bloom, although reddish and yellow forms are also found. The flesh is yellow, relatively juicy, and the stone is difficult to separate.
The plant is characterized by high winter hardiness and low maintenance. The fruits ripen late, in late August — September. It is used for fresh consumption, processing into jam, juices and traditional alcoholic beverages, as well as a rootstock or for creating hedges.
