Plants of this type are shrubs or trees with a multi-stemmed spreading habit and slow growth. The fruits are small, 1.5–3 cm in size, round or teardrop-shaped, and colored blue-black, yellow, or wine-red. The flesh is yellow, and the flavor is characterized as sweet-and-sour and astringent.

Fruit ripening usually occurs by mid-August. The plants are characterized by high vitality and resistance to environmental conditions and are often used as rootstocks for cultivated plum varieties. The fruits are primarily used for processing into juices, jams, preserves, and alcoholic beverages.

In landscape design, these plants are used to create hedges as "wild" plums. In different regions, the group has synonymous names such as Krieche, Kricke, Haferpflaume, and Krete.
