Variety description

10 August 2026

The name Blutbirne is not a designation for one specific variety, but unites a number of European pear forms known for several centuries. Depending on the specific clone, plant characteristics may vary, with the presence of anthocyanins in the fruit pulp being a common feature for the group.

The trees are characterized as medium-sized, reaching 3–3.5 meters in height, with a compact, dense crown. A characteristic feature of young plants is a reddish tint on the shoot tips at the beginning of the growing season. The variety enters fruiting in the third year and possesses high winter hardiness and disease resistance.

Fruits weighing 100–150 g have a pear-shaped or bergamot-like shape. The skin color is green-yellow with red-grey pigmentation. The pulp is dark pink or red, delicate and buttery in texture. Harvesting usually takes place in September; the fruits are distinguished by high transportability due to the firm skin.
