The GAROFANO (GAROFALO) variety is an autochthonous Sicilian variety cultivated primarily in the Castelbuono area of the Palermo province. The tree is characterized by moderate vigor.

Fruits of this variety are distinguished by a specific reddish skin color, which presumably gave the variety its name. The produce possesses good resistance to pathogens and excellent keeping quality during storage.

In literature, there are mentions of other local forms of pears under the name Pera garofana in various regions of Italy. Such forms are often characterized by an aroma reminiscent of cloves and may represent regional varieties rather than a single industrial variety.
