The variety originated in the late 18th century in Piedmont, Italy. The mother tree grew from a seed on the Gavello farm and is the result of a natural cross between the Martin Sec variety and a wild pear. The plant is characterized as vigorous, hardy, and highly productive; old trees can be prone to biennial bearing.

The medium or small-sized fruits have a turbinate-conical shape, often slightly flattened at the poles. The skin is thin but firm, greenish-yellow in color, sometimes with a red or orange blush. The flesh is whitish-yellow, crisp, firm, and aromatic, with a sweet taste and slight astringency.

The variety is parthenocarpic and capable of setting seedless fruits. It is traditionally considered a culinary variety, as its flavor qualities are best revealed through thermal processing.
