The most well-known variant is the variety Esperens Herrenbirne, also known as Belle Lucrative. It is an autumn pear with high-quality flesh, whose fruits ripen from mid- to late September and can be stored until the end of October. The trees are characterized by moderate vigor and good productivity.
Another variant, Plettenberger Herrenbirne, is a local variety from the Sauerland region. The fruits of this variety are small, pear-shaped or top-shaped with skin that turns yellow upon ripening. Historically, they were intended for drying, culinary processing, and the production of pear cheese.
The name Herrenbirne was often used in old German literature as a general designation for dessert pears as opposed to industrial varieties for processing. It is also found as a synonym for other pears, including the Sommerapothekerbirne variety or Italian bergamot varieties.
