The variety is historical and was mentioned as early as the Roman era under the name Pyrus picena. In botanical sources, it is found under the synonym Pyrus communis Spina Carpi. The plants are characterized by longevity, with specimens reaching up to 200 years of age; the variety is adapted to the climate of hilly terrain.
The fruits are of the winter type, with harvesting carried out in October-November. The flesh of the fruits is very firm and dense; it is practically inedible when fresh. The main purpose is culinary use, in particular baking or the preparation of mustard. When stored in a cellar, the fruits retain freshness until April.
