The variety is a regional Portuguese variety not belonging to modern breeding cultivars. It has been historically cultivated by farmers in orchards and home gardens and is included in the genetic resource collections maintained by the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research of Portugal.
The variety is characterized by genetic distinctness from other regional forms and is featured in studies on susceptibility to fire blight, Erwinia amylovora. The fruits of the variety are intended for fresh consumption.
