The tree of this variety is vigorous, long-lived, with a powerful dome-shaped crown resembling an oak. In young age, the shoots can be drooping. The fruits are medium to large in size, almost spherical in shape, green-yellow in color with a blurred dull red blush and brown dots. The flesh is yellowish-white, coarse-grained, and very juicy, with a sweet-tart taste.
The variety is an autumn type; harvest maturity occurs in mid-October. Fruiting is late but regular, with high yields, although the variety is prone to biennial bearing. The tree is hardy, suitable for mountainous regions and various soil types, low susceptibility to scab and fire blight, but prone to physiological wilting.
The fruits are used for the preparation of must (perry) and dried fruits, and are suitable for fresh consumption and cooking. The variety is triploid and considered a poor pollinator for other pears. It has a number of synonyms, such as Kugelbirne, Glockenbirne, Thurgauerbirne, and Späte Wasserbirne.
