The variety was obtained by crossing Rhododendron 'John Walter' and Rhododendron dichroanthum subsp. scyphocalyx. The plant forms a compact rounded crown, reaching a height of about 110 cm and a width of 140 cm by 10 years of age; mature specimens can grow up to 180 cm.
The flowers are orange-red in shade, lightening towards the center to a copper-yellow color, often with brownish-yellow spots on the upper petal. The leaves are leathery, dark green, and oblong in shape. The plant is characterized as relatively frost-resistant, withstanding temperatures down to –22…–28 °C.
