The variety forms an upright shrub reaching a height of 2.9 meters at maturity. The flowers are simple, tubular-funnel-shaped with a diameter of 7–8 cm, and are gathered in dome-shaped inflorescences. A distinctive feature is the long stamens with light-colored anthers, which contrast with the red petals.
The plant belongs to the group of deciduous rhododendrons, which bloom from late May to early June. The variety is characterized as fully winter-hardy.
