The variety Jānis belongs to the group of evergreen rhododendrons. It was obtained as a result of hybridization of the maternal plant Catawbiense Grandiflorum and the paternal Purple Splendour.

There is another variety bred by Rihards Kondratovičs named Jānis Sproģis, which is a hybrid of Nova Zembla and Panenka. It is a vigorous, wide-spreading shrub with satisfactory winter hardiness.
