The Leire variety was obtained as a result of targeted crosses of genotypes from the NEIKER institute germplasm bank. During its development, breeders aimed to produce a productive potato with good appearance, uniform tubers, thin skin, and shallow eyes.

The plant was developed taking into account requirements for resistance against a number of pathogens, including viruses, in particular PVY, nematodes, and fungal diseases. Leire is positioned as a universal-purpose variety, suitable for both fresh consumption and industrial processing, for example, for the production of chips, mashed potatoes, or frozen products.
