The variety is considered very old, its appearance in Sweden being associated with the 18th century. Due to its wide distribution, it has many synonyms, such as Asklanda röd, Farbror Frans, Finnmarkspotatis, Våmhus, Västerbottens röd, and Rauðar íslenskar.
Tubers are round or short-oval, slightly flattened, with deep eyes, having red-violet skin and light yellow flesh, often with reddish veins. The plant flowers sparsely with small white flowers with a red-violet tint; berries are usually not formed. The variety produces a large number of small tubers.
It is a table potato with a high dry matter content and distinct flavor, recommended for boiling. Due to the high sugar content, the tubers may darken when fried. The variety possesses resistance to potato wart and is preserved in gene banks as part of the cultural heritage.
