The Roazon variety was obtained by transferring genetic material from the wild wheat relative Aegilops ventricosa. The main characteristic of the variety is high resistance to eyespot, caused by the pathogen Oculimacula yallundae, which is due to the presence of the specific gene Pch1. The development of the pathogen on this variety is slowed down due to the specific features of appressorium formation and conidial germination.
In scientific literature, the variety is primarily regarded as a breeding standard and a valuable genetic source for soft wheat improvement programs. Biochemical studies of the variety included analysis of the allelic diversity of omega-gliadins and glutenin subunits to evaluate baking quality. Quantitative agronomic characteristics of the variety, such as yield or maturity dates, are not described in detail in open publications.
