The variety is a local landrace originating from the Caronie region in Sicily. The plant is characterized by tall height and a late maturity period.

The ear has a spindle shape, a square cross-section, and a semi-dense structure; the awns are long, divergent, and colored black and yellow-red. The grain is elliptical in shape, dark brown, vitreous, and reaches 7 mm in length.

The variety is adapted for cultivation under low-input conditions in the provinces of Enna, Ragusa, Caltanissetta, and Catania. It is traditionally used in biodiversity conservation programs, often in mixtures with other local varieties.
