The variety is also known by the synonyms Alfrocheiro, Baboso Negro, and Bruñal. Genetic studies confirm its connection with other Iberian varieties and distinguish it as an independent species, different from the white variety Albariño.
Wines from this variety are noted for their good freshness and fine-grained tannins. The variety is cultivated under organic and biodynamic farming conditions, in particular on the steep slate slopes of the Asturias region.
