The variety is an ancient local crop that has adapted to the conditions of the Canary Islands over more than 500 years. It has a number of synonyms, including Marmajuelo, Bermejo, Bermejudo and Vermejuelo. Genetically, the variety is independent but contributes to the diversity of the region, for instance, as a parent form of the spontaneous hybrid Malvasía Volcánica.

The plant is well adapted to cultivation in sandy soils. One of the characteristic features of fruiting is instability of fruit set. Specific data on disease resistance in open publications are unavailable.

Wines from this variety are characterized by high acidity, a mineral framework, and aromatic notes of palm leaf, passion fruit, and fig leaves.
