Variety description

The variety is a natural color mutation of the Silvaner variety and was historically found in mixed plantings of old German vineyards. The berries of the variety are medium-sized, round, and densely packed in the cluster. Despite the dark red, violet, or blue color of the skin, the pulp of the berries contains almost no anthocyanins, which allows it to be used for the production of white wines.
The variety is characterized as late-ripening. It is sensitive to frosts, chlorosis, and is susceptible to downy mildew and gray mold, however, the thick skin of the berries provides some resistance to rotting processes. Wines from this variety are distinguished by their body, acid structure, and minerality; upon maceration on the skins, they can acquire a salmon or copper-golden hue.
