The variety is a natural mutation of Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and is also known by the names Frühburgunder and Pinot Noir Précoce. Genetically, it belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and has a long history of origin.

The vine exhibits strong vertical growth. The clusters are small and compact; the berries are smaller than those of the original variety and have thin skins. A biological feature is the tendency toward flower shedding, which leads to the natural loosening of the cluster and can reduce yields.

The variety ripens 2–3 weeks earlier than Pinot Noir, which allows for harvesting before the period of autumn humidity. It is used for the production of red wines, which are characterized by velvety tannins, moderate acidity, and pronounced fruit notes.
