The variety originates from the Valais region in Switzerland and is genetically the result of crossing the variety Rouge du Pays (Cornalin) with an unknown, presumably extinct variety. Historically linked to the Aosta Valley in Italy.

A black-berried wine grape variety characterized by high vine vigor. Wine made from these grapes has an intense color and pronounced aromas of cranberry, raspberry, and currant, with a very high acidity of the product.

In the 20th century, the variety was on the verge of extinction but was saved thanks to the efforts of the Bovernier municipality. Currently, it is included in industry catalogs and is protected as a genetic resource.
